Flow Monitoring–Transect Wilfred Ck
BWS has sensors installed in several local creeks to record the water level over time. However, water level alone doesn’t tell us much. Several times a year we perform a transect in each of these creeks. A transect involves measuring the velocity of water at twenty different points in the stream. These velocity measurements, combined with the depth and width of the creek, give us a flow rate for that particular time. When we match these flow rates to the level data we can extrapolate flow data for long periods. This tells us how much water flows in spring vs late summer for example. This becomes very useful data.
Mike Mesford runs this monitoring program and would be happy to bring interested people along to see what transects are all about. Email info@beaufortwater.org to connect with Mike.
