The rain held and the forest was glorious! Our Earth Day celebration took place in one of our favorite and most pristine locations in our watersheds: Lower Waterloo Creek Forest. We held a guided interpretive walk led by Verna Mumby, whose knowledge of trees, mosses, ferns and insects held us in rapt attention. After 2 hours we felt like we had barely touched the surface of what one could learn about such a complex interconnected ecosystem. To see a forest that has been mostly left alone to grow and evolve in a natural way has become a rare and eye-opening experience.
BWS and other groups are advocating to have Lower Waterloo Creek Forest designated as an official Old Growth Management Area (OGMA) to ensure that it will never be logged. We are encouraged by recent steps, but the process is certainly not complete.
