SUMMARY:Stream Sampling--All Streams
DESCRIPTION:Our largest monitoring program involves sampling for water quality in 20 creeks\, for 31 weeks each year.  We have three teams\, or ‘Pods” based in Bowser\, Fanny Bay and Royston.  The parameters that we measure include: air and water temperature\, pH\, dissolved oxygen\, specific conductivity\, and turbidity.  On most creeks we also have staff gauges to track water height.  If you are interested in learning more about our stream sampling please email info@beaufortwater.org.  We enjoy taking people out so that they can learn what volunteering for stream sampling involves. \nBowser Pod\n\nMorning:  Chef\, Sandy\, Thames\, Nash (2 sites)\, Hunts\, & Annie (2 sites) Creeks\n\nFanny Bay Pod\n\nMorning:  Tsable\, then upper sites on Cowie\, Apple-Cherry\, Wilfred\, Waterloo\, & Mud Bay Creeks\n\nRoyston Pod\n\nMorning: Trent R\, Bloedel\, Hart\, Hindoo\, Emily\, Spense & Beacon Creeks

SUMMARY:Monthly General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly meetings are open to all members and people interested in learning more about the organization.  We sometimes schedule Board-specific time for the meetings. After the business portion of the meeting is concluded\, we have social time with refreshments that each person brings.  While a remarkable amount of board business is covered\, there is a lot of laughter and camaraderie. \nTo obtain a copy of the agenda and monthly reports from Directors and Program Leads\, please email info@beaufortwater.org.  We do have a zoom option\, but in person is much more engaging.

SUMMARY:Flow Monitoring--Transect Cook Ck
DESCRIPTION:BWS has sensors installed in several local creeks to record the water level over time. However\, water level alone doesn’t tell us much. Several times a year we perform a transect in each of these creeks. A transect involves measuring the velocity of water at twenty different points in the stream. These velocity measurements\, combined with the depth and width of the creek\, give us a flow rate for that particular time. When we match these flow rates to the level data we can extrapolate flow data for long periods. This tells us how much water flows in spring vs late summer for example. This becomes very useful data. \nMike Mesford runs this monitoring program and would be happy to bring interested people along to see what transects are all about.  Email info@beaufortwater.org to connect with Mike.

SUMMARY:Refundable Sorting
DESCRIPTION:Sorting refundable is one of BWS’s main revenue sources.  That’s how we buy a lot of our monitoring equipment and pay for general operating expenses (like the website).  Lise is amazing at keeping us all organized and tracking exactly what flows through the sorting system.  We welcome new volunteers to join us for laughs\, a quick time commitment\, and yes\, a bit of stickiness–gloves provided.  Contact info@beaufortwater.org for information on where to join us.

SUMMARY:Protecting Salmon from Tire Wear Toxicants: 6PPDQ Workshop 2025
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in 2021\, the BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF) and Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Applied Environmental Research Labs (AERL) partnered to assess the impacts of tire wear toxins (TWTs)\, specifically the chemical compound 6PPDQ\, along the East Coast of Vancouver Island (ECVI). \nBCCF and AERL have since collaborated with local First Nations\, stewardship groups\, and all levels of government (municipal/regional/federal) across the ECVI to execute a comprehensive monitoring program. \nThe BCCF/VIU AERL project team will be hosting another workshop in Nanaimo\, BC. The event\, Protecting Salmon From Tire Wear Toxicants – 6PPDQ Workshop 2025\, will run for two days: May 8 – 9\, 2025. This event will be split into four sessions this year: 6PPDQ Policy\, Engineering & Solutions\, Monitoring & Lessons Learned\, and Toxicology. There is limited space this year\, so keep an eye on your email for when registration opens.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Forest Walk
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that we will be hosting our Earth Day Forest Walk again this year.  Verna Mumby\, local Consulting Arborist also known as “the Tree Lady”\, will be guiding attendees through the wonderful forest paths along Thames Creek in Bowser.  Verna’s knowledge of the forest ecosystem is fascinating to listen to\, and makes us fully appreciate this precious resource. \nWe will meet at the Wildwood Community Trail trailhead.  Just south of Bowser turn onto McColl Road. The trailhead and parking area is just past the railway tracks\, approximately 400m west of Hwy 19A. \nWe will start the morning walk at 11 am\, and the afternoon walk at 1 pm and head north towards Thames Creek.  The walk will last approximately 60 minutes. The goal of this walk is educational\, so we ask that dogs not attend. The path is well developed\, but has up and down terrain.  Light hikers and possibly a walking pole are recommended.\nNo registration fee; donations to Beaufort Watershed Stewards welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Well Data Upload Training
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce a training session for our new data import tool. Matthew Fox from Strathcona Business and Technology Services has been working on this for the last six months and it’s ready to roll. We collect level data from numerous wells and a number of creeks and have been storing it online. This tool will allow us to begin to use the data by\, among other things\, loading it into ArcGIS and creating groundwater maps. \nMost of you will not have had any direct contact with this data but it’s important that lots of us are aware of this tool even if only a few of us ever actually use it. It should give you a greater understanding of where our groundwater program is headed. As well\, the training will touch on some Microsoft products available to us as a non-profit that may become useful as we continue to grow.

SUMMARY:Mapping Trent River
DESCRIPTION:On March 6 & 7\, BWS will be part of a collaboration lead by Arin Yeomans-Routledge of Astraea Consulting.  The goal is to obtain current location and morphology data on the Trent River\, from shoreline to Hwy 19.  Volunteers will be out in chest waders walking the creek\, noting creek bed geology\, riparian status\, salmon access and obstructions\, and general terrain.  This information will be critical in understanding salmon access to spawning locations\, and for interpreting the results of our surface water monitoring.
